What is microneedling?

A microneedling device consists of a motorized pen and a cartridge containing dozens of small needles. The device is used to create thousands of micro-channels in the skin. At Meridian Dermatology, we use the SkinStylus Microneedling system. This is one of the few FDA approved microneedling devices on the market, meaning it has clearly demonstrated its safety an effectiveness through a rigorous review process.

How does it work?

As a result of the controlled trauma to the skin from the device, the body begins to produce increased collagen and elastin as well as new blood vessels. Together these work to tighten the skin, decrease wrinkles, improve skin texture and pigmentation, and reduce the appearance of scars. While it is primarily used on the face, it can also be used on the neck, upper chest, and back.

What is a treatment like?

Prior to treatment, the skin is properly cleaned and a numbing agent is applied. Because of the numbing, pain and discomfort are kept to a minimum. A treatment takes about 30 minutes depending on the size of the areas requiring treatment. After the treatment, there may be some mild redness, but otherwise the skin still appears normal. There is no required downtime after treatment which is a main advantage of the treatment.

When will I begin to see results?

While the skin can show some improvement in appearance immediately, results take several weeks to fully develop. This is because it takes time for the body to generate new collagen and elastin which are essential to achieving the desired results. Patients do best after multiple treatments as the results are cumulative.
