What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are used to destroy the top layers of the skin in a controlled fashion. When done properly, patients are able to achieve significant improvement in the appearance of their skin. Chemical peels help with fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, discoloration,  and acne (including acne scarring). They can also help tighten the skin, decrease pore size, and improve skin texture.

How is the procedure performed?

Prior to a chemical peel, the skin is thoroughly cleaned and stripped of oils that would interfere with the chemical peel. After the skin is properly prepared, the peel is applied evenly to the skin. Some peels are applied in multiple layers, while others are applied as a single layer. Some peels need to be rinsed off after a certain amount of time to neutralize the solution, but most do not require rinsing. After application, proper protection including sunscreen is usually applied. Most appointments take 20-30 minutes.

What are the side effects of the treatment?

Depending on the type of peel, there may be little to no side effects. More aggressive peels can sting significantly during application, but this sensation quickly subsides. Skin peeling usually starts on about day 3 and lasts up to 7 days. After peeling, there may be increased redness or sensitivity of the skin, although this typically only lasts a few days.

How often can peels be done?

More aggressive peels can be repeated every 2-4 weeks. Less aggressive peels including those done for acne can be repeated weekly.
